TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 FORD F150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. WITHIN A COUPLE OF WEEKS THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT OPERATING WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH. THE DEALER WAS CONTACT WHO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER A RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 122,000. UPDATED 12/5/12 THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT, DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE.

I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM TOWN WHEN ALL THE BALL BEARINGS FELL OUT OF THE STEERING COLUMN AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME LOOSE AND THE TRUCK BEGAN TO SWAY FROM RIGHT TO LEFT, IT WAS CONTROLLABLE AT THE LOW SPEED I WAS GOING BUT THANK GOD I WASN'T ON AN INTERSTATE OR HIGHWAY AT A HIGHER SPEED I COULD HAVE RUN OFF THE ROAD OR WORSE HAD A HEAD ON COLLISION ! THE TRUCK HAS NOT LEFT MY PROPERTY SINCE BUT I STILL HAVE TO KEEP FULL COVERAGE INSURANCE AND TAGGED FOR INSURANCE PURPOSES AND A LIEN FROM MY BANK ON IT,I HAVE ALSO REPLACED THE STARTER ON IT EIGHT (8) TIMES THE PARTS ARE VERY CHEAP BUT IT HAS AN AIRBAG AND MY LOCAL FORD DEALER GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF 200.00 TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS TO REPLACE TWO SIX AND SEVEN DOLLAR BEARINGS. WHEN THE INCIDENT HAPPENED I HAD NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED SINCE THE BALL BEARINGS ARE VERY TINY AND ARE HARD TO SEE AND IT TOOK A LONG TIME TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED MY TRUCK JUST SITS THERE ALL THIS TIME BECAUSE IM AFRAID OF SOMEONE GETTING HURT SERIOUSLY OR KILLED BECAUSE IM AFRAID OF LOSING CONTROL ON THE STEERING. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DETERMINED THAT THE FIRE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO AN ELECTRICAL FAILURE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 225,000.

MY 1997 FORD F150 STARTED ON FIRE IN THE PARKING LOT OF MY EMPLOYER, FIFTEEN MINUTES AFTER I PARKED THE VEHICLE FROM A 5 MILE ROUND TRIP. THE FIRE STARTED UNDER THE HOOD AND QUICKLY MOVED INTO THE CAB OF THE TRUCK BEFORE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT PUT OUT THE FIRE. WHEN INSPECTING THE ENGINE AREA WITH THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, THE EXACT AREA OF WHERE THE FIRE STARTED COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. LUCKILY, NO ONE, INCLUDING MYSELF, WAS INJURED, AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN OUR HOME WHEN IT STARTED ON FIRE. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE VEHICLE INSPECTED, AND IF NECESSARY, SEEK RECOURSE, BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO PROCEED.

PULL GEAR SHIFTER DOWN TO D1 AND SMOKE AND FIRE CAME OUT OF THE STEERING COLUMN: ALL OF THE INSTRUMENT LIGHTS WENT OUT AND THE TRUCK WAS UNABLE TO USE THE OVERDRIVE FUNCTION. REPLACED SEVERAL FUSES AND TRIED AGAIN WITH THE SAME RESULTS. I DISMANTLED THE STEERING COLUMN AND NOTICED THAT THE WIRING HARNESS IS TWO SHORT AND ROUTED AROUND THE STEERING COLUMN CAUSING IT TO BREAK EVERYTIME THE TRUCK IS PUT INTO D1. FORD MOTOR COMPANY NOR ANY AUTO STORE HAVE ANY PARTS TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. THE TRUCK IS STILL AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION. I TOOK MY TRUCK TO A FORD DEALER AND THEY DID NOT HAVE A FIX FOR THE PROBLEM. THEY RECOMMEND THAT I NOT USE D2/D1/OVERDRIVE.

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 1997 FORD F-150. I HAD PARKED IT FOR A FEW WEEKS UNTIL I SOLD MY CHEVY TAHOE. WHEN I WENT TO START IT THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. I CHARGED THE BATTERY AND WHEN I RECONNECTED IT I WENT IN THE CAB AND COULD SMELL BURNING PLASTIC AND ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH WERE ON, EVEN THOUGH THE KEY WAS IN MY HAND. I LOOKED UNDER THE DASH AND FOUND THAT THE GEM MODULE WAS SIZZLING AND SMOKING. I QUICKLY GOT OUT AND DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT IT WOULD HAVE STARTED ON FIRE HAD I NOT NOTICED IT IN TIME. IT SURPRISED ME THAT NO FUSES WERE BLOWN. I LOOKED ONLINE AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON THING FOR ALOT OF 1997 - 2003 FORDS AND WAS WONDERING WHY THIS HASN'T BEEN RECALLED. I WORKED FOR A CHEVY DEALERSHIP IN MARQUETTE MI SO I KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT RECALLS AND I FEEL THAT THIS IS VERY UNSAFE AND IT SHOULD NOT BE AN EXPENSE PUT ON THE CONSUMER. I THINK THAT WITH THE DECLINE IN SALES FOR THE AMERICAN AUTOMAKERS THEY SHOULD BE TAKING CARE OF THESE FAULTY MODULES. I AM CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF REPLACING IT SO IM NOT SURE HOW MUCH IT WILL COST ME BUT IM EXPECTING IT TO BE BETWEEN $120- $160.

THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL FIRE IN THE WIRING HARNESS CONNECTED TO THE MASTER CYLINDER (BRAKES). NO DAMAGE WAS DONE DUE TO QUICK REACTION BUT IT LEFT THE BRAKES WITHOUT POWER AND THE TRUCK WITHOUT BRAKE LIGHTS. THE PROBLEM IS BELIEVED TO BE RELATED TO THE "SWITCH FIRE" PROBLEM THAT RESULTED IN A WIDE-SPREAD FORD RECALL. THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION IS A 1997 FORD F-150 4X4. TRUCK WAS PURCHASED FROM LEASE-HOLDER AND FULL WARRANTY WAS TRANSFERRED TO ME. I HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL RECALL NOTICES BUT NOT THE ONE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PROBLEM.

I HAVE A 1997 FORD F150 WITH A 4.2 L ENGINE THAT JUST TURNED 100,000 MILES. I BOUGHT IT SECOND HAND FROM A FORD DEALERSHIP JUNE 1999 WITH ABOUT 45,000 MILES ON IT. THIS TRUCK WAS METICULOUSLY CARED FOR OVER THE YEARS. AFTER NOTICING THAT THE COOLANT LEVEL WAS DOWN AFTER A A RECENT REFILL I REFILLED IT AGAIN. I DIDN'T DRIVE THE VEHICLE FOR ABOUT TEN DAYS BUT WHEN I WENT TO START IT THE ENGINE MADE A CLUNK AND WOULDN'T CRANK. I SUSPECTED THE BATTERY AFTER A CHARGE YIELDED THE SAME RESULTS. THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED BUT STILL THE SAME RESULT AND ALSO AFTER REFINISHING LEAD TERMINALS AND STARTER REPLACEMENT. I CHECKED THE OIL FILLER CAP AND THERE WAS A THICK LIGHT BROWN SUBSTANCE I HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE ON IT AND ALL THE WAY DOWN AROUND THE INSIDE WALL OF THE FILLER TUBE. I SUSPECTED A LEAK IN THE HEAD GASKET OR ELSEWHERE AND WENT TO THE INTERNET SITES FOR CLARIFICATION. AFTER SOME RESEARCH I REALIZED I WAS FAR FROM BEING THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. AS I SUSPECTED THE COOLANT LEAKS VIA THE LOOSE SEAL OF THE HEAD GASKET INTO ONE OR MORE OF THE CYLINDERS. IT APPEARS THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN DEFECT AND RECALL THAT FORD NEVER CONVEYED TO ALL THE OWNERS OF THIS MODEL.

I AM NOW HAVING THE WATER LEAK ISSUE INTO THE GEM DUE TO FAULTY WINDSHIELD SEAL. IT IS STARTING TO CAUSE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS. THE FOLLOWING IS A TSB RELEASED BY FORD: FORD SPECIAL MESSAGE #15773 VARIOUS ELECTRICAL CONDITIONS RESULTING FROM WATER INTRUSION INTO THE GEM/CJB SOME 1997-2002 EXPEDITION AND 1998-2002 NAVIGATOR VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT VARIOUS UNUSUAL ELECTRICAL CONDITIONS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO: FRONT OR REAR BLOWER OR EATC STAYING ON WITH KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION, RADIO STAYING ON AFTER DOORS OPENED AND KEY OUT OF IGNITION, WIPER CIRCUIT FAILURE CODES, AND MULTIPLE SYSTEM WARNING LIGHTS WITH 'SHORT TO POWER' OR 'LOW BATTERY VOLTAGE' DTCS. THESE SYMPTOMS MOST OFTEN OCCUR AFTER A RAIN OR SNOW. THIS MAY BE DUE TO GEM/CJB WATER INTRUSION RESULTING FROM A WINDSHIELD WATER LEAK. TO SERVICE, REMOVE THE GEM AND CJB FROM THE VEHICLE, SEPARATE THEM AND INSPECT FOR WATER CONTAMINATION OR CORROSION. IF FOUND IN EITHER COMPONENT, REPLACE BOTH COMPONENTS AND COMPLETELY RESEAL THE WINDSHIELD. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET I HAVE FOUND THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY SOUL EXPERIENCING THESE ISSUES. APPARENTLY FORD IS NOT FIXING THIS OBVIOUS MANUFACTURING DEFECT AT THEIR EXPENSE BUT PASSING IT TO THE CUSTOMERS. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A FORD ISSUE THAT THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT FOR QUITE SOME TIME. PLEASE HELP WITH RESOLVING THIS ISSUE AS SOME PEOPLE HAVE SPENT IN THE THOUSANDS FIXING ISSUES THAT THIS WATER INTRUSION ISSUE HAS CAUSED.

VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN DRIVEWAY WITH DOORS LOCKED AND IGNITION IN THE OFF POSITION. NO ONE WAS NEAR OR IN THE VEHICLE. LOOKED OUT WINDOW AND NOTICED WHAT LOOKED LIKE MIST FROM A WATER SPRINKLER FROM THE FRONT SIDE OF TRUCK. LOOKING CLOSER, I REALIZED IT WAS SMOKE AND THEN SAW FLAMES FROM THE TIRE WELL AND UNDER THE HOOD BY THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS. CALLED 911. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED VERY QUICKLY, PUTTING THE FIRE OUT. THEIR ASSESSMENT WAS IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL SHORT WHICH HAD CAUSED THE FIRE. THE FIRE CAUSED THE HOOD HYDRAULIC LIFT TO EXPLODE LIKE A ROCKET, HITTING THE WINDSHIELD, CRACKING IT AND THEN SHOOTING OFF INTO THE YARD. THE FRAMES INSIDE THE ENGINE HOUSING BY THE DRIVERS TIRE BURNT THE HOUSING COMPLETELY AWAY. THE WIRING HAS BEEN COMPLETELY BURNED AND MELTED AWAY INSIDE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. ALL THE PLASTIC FLUID CONTAINERS MELTED, THE ENTIRE ENGINE HOUSING, ENGINE AND ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS UNDER THE HOOD WERE BURNED UP OR DAMAGED IN SOME WAY BY THIS FIRE. THE TRUCK WILL NOT START OR RUN. NONE OF THE LIGHTS WORK, RADIO, HEAT, AIR OR POWER FUNCTIONS WORK. THE TRUCK IS TOTALLY INOPERABLE. I CONTACTED THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND THEY DIRECTED ME TO THIS SITE TO LOOK FOR FIRE RELATED DEFECTS AND TO FILE A COMPLAINT. THE TRUCK HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AS IT IS BEYOND REPAIR SINCE ALL THE WIRING AND MOST OF THE INSIDES UNDER THE HOOD HAVE BURNED UP OR MELTED.

1997 MODEL YEAR FORD F-150 ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE WHILE PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY OF MY RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE IS A V-8, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, EQUIPPED WITH CRUISE CONTROL AND JUST OVER 85,000 MILES. IT IS A WORK TRUCK DRIVEN DAILY, ABOUT 200 MILES PER WEEK. THERE WERE NO PREVIOUS PROBLEMS WITH EITHER THE CRUISE CONTROL OR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. AT ABOUT 8:15 ON THE EVENING OF AUG. 25TH I RETURNED HOME AND PARKED IN MY DRIVE WAY ABOUT SIX FEET FROM THE GARAGE DOOR. I WENT TO BED AT 10:30 P.M. MY NEIGHBOR RETURNED TO HIS HOME AT 12:05 A.M. HE NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER MY HOOD AND WITNESSED THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT IGNITE INTO A BALL OF FLAMES. HE IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND USED MY GARDEN HOSE TO WET DOWN MY GARAGE DOOR THEREBY PREVENTING MY HOUSE FROM CATCHING FIRE. I WAS FINALLY AWAKEN AROUND 12:30A.M. BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. THE TRUCK WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED, THE INSULATION HAD MELTED FROM THE INSIDE OF MY GARAGE DOOR, THE GARAGE DOOR WINDOWS HAD CRACKED FROM THE HEAT, THE TRIM MELTED, AND THE GUTTERS ABOVE THE GARAGE WARPED. IF NOT FOR THE QUICK THINKING OF OUR NEIGHBOR WE COULD HAVE LOST OUR LIVES. OUR BEDROOMS ARE LOCATED TO THE REAR OF THE HOUSE AND THE GARAGE IS AT THE FRONT, BY THE TIME WE REALIZED THERE WAS A FIRE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TOO LATE.

IN SPEAKING WITH FORD MOTOR COMPANY THEY HAVE A RECALL ON CRUISE CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCHES BUT UNTIL TODAY IT DID NOT GO BACK TO MY YEAR MODEL. DUE TO A TELEVISION BROADCAST ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 12, 2005 FORD HAS NOW INCLUDED VEHICLES UP TO 1995 HOWEVER WHEN I SPOKE WITH THEM TODAY THEY ADVISED IT ONLY INCLUDES VEHICLES MANUFACTURED AT PARTICULAR PLANTS WHICH DOES NOT INCLUDE MY VEHICLE. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A LOCAL FORD DEALER AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT MANAGER STATED "MORE THAN LIKELY THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH". MY FAMILY AND I WERE FORTUNATE THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT PARKED IN THE GARAGE WHERE THE DAMAGE COULD HAVE BEEN SUBSTANTIAL AND RESULTED IN A LOSS OF LIFE AS MY CHILDREN'S BEDROOMS ARE LOCATED ABOVE THE GARAGE. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE FORD EXTEND THIS RECALL TO EVERY VEHICLE REGARDLESS OF THE PLANT IT WAS MANUFACTURED AND AM SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT OF MY COSTS HOWEVER FORD IS DENYING ANY PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE. ANY ASSISTANCE YOU COULD OFFER TO HELP MAKE THIS COMPANY ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR POOR MANUFACTURING PRACTICES WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

WAS WAKEN UP ABOUT 3 IN THE MORNING BY COPS TELLING ME MY TRUCK WAS ON FIRE. THE TRUCK ENDED UP BURNT EVERYWHERE BUT THE BED TOTAL LOSS PRETTY MUCH UN DRIVABLE. BURNED A 95 CARAVAN AND PART OF A 2002 FORD EXCURSION. I KNOW HAVE I VEHICLE TO MOVE MY KIDS THAT ARE IN SCHOOL AND MYSELF AND MY WIFE WHICH ALSO NOW HAS SOME SERIOUS NERVE DAMAGE SHE HAS NIGHTMARES OF OTHER VEHICLE BURNING AND CAN HARDLY SLEEP. THE FIRE DEPT. DETERMINED THE FIRE WAS ELECTRICAL IN NATURE.

I COULD NOT CONTROL THE FIRE AND FOCUSED ON KEEPING THE TRAILER COOL. WHEN THE FIRE TRUCK FINALLY ARRIVED IT TOOK ABOUT 30 MINUTES TO PUT THE FIRE TOTALLY OUT. AT THAT POINT THE FIRE HAD BURNED THROUGH THE CAB TO REAR SEATS. BASED ON HOW THE TRUCK BURNED, I BELIEVE IT WAS ATTRIBUTED TO A CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH FIRE.

I GRABBED THE CORDLESS AND HEADED TOWARDS THE FRONT DOOR. JUST AS I WAS COMING OUT THE FRONT DOOR, MY HUSBAND SAID TURN THE WATER ON. HE ALREADY HAD THE GARDEN HOSE IN HIS HAND, PULLING IT TOWARDS THE TRUCK. HE WAS ABLE TO PUT THE FIRE OUT BEFORE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT GOT THERE, BY SPRAYING ON TOP OF THE HOOD, UNDER THE HOOD, UNDER THE FRONT WHEEL WELL, AND INSIDE THE CAB UNDERNEATH THE DASH ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. HAD THIS FIRE OCCURED FIVE MINUTES LATER, MY HUSBAND WOULD HAVE BEEN IN IT, ON THE HIGHWAY. THANK THE LORD, HE WASN'T! THE FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORTS INDICATED THAT THE FIRE STARTED IN THE ENGINE DEPARTMENT. I DID NOT HAVE ANY WARNING LIGHTS PRIOR THE THE INCIDENT; THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN OPERATING NORMALLY ALL THAT DAY. I PUT GAS IN THE VEHICLE AROUND 11 A.M. ON THIS DATE AND CHECKED THE OIL AS WELL, TIRES, ETC.; AS FAR AS I COULD TELL EVERYTHING WAS OK. ON 03/24/2005 THE NBC NEWS AIRED A STORY CONCERNING THE FORD F150, INVESTIGATING A RECALL ON THE CRUISE CONTROL EMISSION WHICH COULD RESULT IN THE VEHICLE INAVERTANTLY CATCHING ON FIRE. MY VEHICLE WAS CONSIDERED TOTALED (AND I DO HAVE PICTURES). MY CONCERN NOW IS THAT THE FINANCE COMPANY (UNITED AUTO CREDIT) IS EXPECTING TO RECEIVE CAR PAYMENTS AND ARE HARASSING ME AND MY HUSBAND DAILY. THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY WAS CALLED ON 03/10/2005, I CONTRACTED CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE AND INFORMED THEM OF THE SITUATION AS WELL, I WAS TOLD BY THE FORD COMPANY THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS IN MY VEHICLE AT ALL (WHICH ACCORDING TO YOUR REPORTS IS NOT TRUE).

IN THE INSURANCE INVESTIGATION IT WAS DETERMINED IT WAS CAUSED BY A SHORT IN THE WIRES THE HOT SPOT BEING IN THE STEERING COLUMN. PARKED AT 5:45. AT 10:00 PM HEARD A LOUD NOISE LIKE THUNDER. NEIGHBOR CALLED AND INFORMED OF TRUCK WAS ON FIRE. THE FIRE WAS COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE TIRE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE BURNED AND EXPLODED. THE FIRE SEEMED TO BE MORE INTENSE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. THE FIRE DAMAGED THE CAR PORT. HAVE PHOTOS AND WILL E-MAIL TO BRUCE YORK. PRIOR TO THE FIRE A FUSE HAD BEEN CHANGED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT COME OUT OF PARK. PRIOR TO THE FIRE THE CRUSIE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING AND WE HAD TO REPLACE A FUSE BECUSE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT COME OUT OF PARK. WE REPLACED THE FUSE 3 OR 4 TIMES. ON THE LAST TIME WE JUST PARKED THE VEHICLE AFTER THE FUSE WAS REPLACED AND DID NOT DRIVE IT. THE ONLY ELECTRONIC AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT WAS A STEREO PROFFESIONALY INSTALLED A YEAR BEFORE THE FIRE. THE FIRE DID NOT SPREAD TO THE HOUSE BUT DID SPREAD TO ANOTHER VEHICLE, THE CAR PORT, AND A BOAT. 35MM PHOTOGRAPHS HAVE BEEN TAKEN AND WILL BE SENT TO BRUCE YORK. VEHICLE WAS INSURED LIABILITY ONLY.

TO DISCOVER THAT THE FORD F150 PICK UP WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE FLAMES WERE COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND BEGINNING TO SPREAD TO THE CAB. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND THEY ARRIVED QUICKLY AND IT TOOK ABOUT FIVE MINUTES WITH THE HOSE FULLY ON THE FIRE TO PUT IT OUT. THERE WERE PERSONAL ITEMS LOST IN THE TRUCK, THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE HOUSE, PAINT BUBBLED, PLANTS WERE KILLED, THE DRIVE WAY WAS STAINED AND DAMAGED, AND WE WERE ALL TRAUMATIZED.

ON 5/3/02 ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON AND WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY CHECKED IT AND REPLACED THE DPF SENSOR, UPDATED COMPUTER AND CLEANED FUEL INJECTORS. THE FOLLOWING WEEK, I HAD TROUBLE STARTING 3 TIMES AFTER WORK. THE FOLLOWING WEDNESDAY, MY WIFE DROVE IT TO WORK AND WHEN SHE TRIED TO START IT AFTER WORK THERE WAS A LOUD "BANG" AND IT TOOK ANOTHER 1/2 HR TO GET IT GOING. WHEN SHE GOT IT GOING AGAIN THERE WAS A LOUD "TAPPING" FROM THE ENGINE. WE CALLED THE DEALER AND TOWED IT IN. THEY CHECKED AND SAID THE COOLANT WAS LEAKING INTO THE OIL AND THE ENGINE COULD NOT BE REBUILT. IT WAS GOING TO COST US $4000 PLUS LABOR TO HAVE ANOTHER ENGINE PUT IN. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN VERY WELL MAINTAINED. ON DOING SOME RESEARCH WE FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE, AND THERE WAS A RECALL (#99B29) RELATED TO THIS PROBLEM THAT WE NEVER RECEIVED. WE ORDERED THE TRUCK IN JAN 1996, AND TOOK DELIVERY IN MARCH 96 WHICH FALLS WITHIN ALL OF THE DATE RANGES SPECIFIED ON F150.COM. WE HAVE SINCE CONTACTED OUR SALESMAN, HE CHECKED OUT THE PROBLEM AND CALLED US BACK TELLING US TO BRING IT IN. THIS WILL INVOLVE ANOTHER TOWING AND I'M NOT SURE IT WILL SOLVE ANYTHING WE DO NOT ALREADY KNOW. HOWEVER, THEY WERE QUICK TO RESPOND THEY WOULD REPLACE THE ALUMINUM HEAD FOR $1,500.... SAYS IT IS NOT A FORD DEFECT. HOWEVER, I AM FINDING THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM. THE LOCAL FORD SHOP SAYS THEY ROUTINELY SEE THIS PROBLEM AND IT IS ONLY COVERED IF UNDER WARRANTY. SINCE MY TRUCK IS A USED VEHICLE ... NOT COVERED. WHEN THE SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT, THE SUDDEN BANG AND FOLLOWING LOUD NOISE CAUSED ME TO SWERVE ON THE HIGHWAY.... FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NOBODY NEXT TO ME AT THE TIME. THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW IN JUNE, 1997. BEGINNING IN NOVEMBER, 2000 I HAVE EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS PROBLEMS, MAINLY WITH THE ENGINE AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN OUT OF MY POSSESSION FOR ALMOST 3 MONTHS NOW AND I AM OUT OF POCKET OVER $3,000 IN REPAIR WORK. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD MOTOR CO. BOTH IN WRITING AND CALLING THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT, AND THEY HAVE OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE AND BASICALLY HAVE TOLD ME THE PROBLEMS ARE NOT THEIR CONCERN. I HAVE HAD A FRONT TIMING COVER GASKET REPLACED, MAJOR ENGINE REPAIR WORK, SPARK PLUGS CHANGED, ELECTRICAL WIRES REPLACED, AND NOW A "COMPUTER BRAIN" WAS BAD IN THE VEHICLE. THE TRUCK'S CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINS ON AND THE TRUCK STILL HESITATES, STALLS AND LURCHES WHILE DRIVING, WHICH IS NOT SAFE. I HAVE NO WHERE TO TURN AND OBVIOUSLY NO MONEY LEFT TO PUT IN TO THIS VEHICLE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW A 3 YEAR OLD TRUCK, PURCHASED BRAND NEW CAN HAVE SO MANY PROBLEMS, I CAN'T SEEM TO GET AN ANSWER FROM ANYBODY, INCLUDING FORD.

I FEEL THAT THIS IS NOT A WEAR AND TEAR ITEM AND SHOULD BE REPLACED AS A MATTER OF SAFETY . AS A MATTER OF FACT, THEY CHARGED AND EXTRA HOUR (2 TOTAL) OF DIAGNOSTIC LABOR THAN OTHER DEALERSHIPS THAT WERE CONTACTED. THE CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE HOTLINE WAS CONTACTED, AND THEY DID NOT KNOW OF ANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS MODULE. HOWEVER, I DID FIND OUT FROM THE NHTSTA THAT THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN. I FEEL THAT THERE SHOULD BE SOME RESPONSIBILITY ACCEPTED BY EITHER THE DEALERSHIP OR THE MANUFACTURER, FORD.

CAME IN FROM THE PASTURE AROUND 7-8:00 P.M. PARKED TRUCK UNDER CARPORT. WOKE UP AROUND 5:00 A. M. AND FIRE WAS COMING OUT FROM UNDER BOTH FRONT FENDER WELLS AND THE CAB WAS FULL OF SMOKE AND FIRE. BY THE TIME THE FIRE DEPARTMENT GOT TO THE HOUSE, IT WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES WHICH RESUTLED IN TOTAL LOSS OF HOME AND TRUCK. A FIRE INVESTIGATOR FEELS THE CAUSE OF THE VEHICLE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY A SHORT IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. CONSUMER HAS BECAME AWARE OF RECALL 98S14, REGARDING THE LUGS/NUTS/BOLTS. STEERING NOT OPERATING PROPERLY, IT LOCKS UP WHEN IT RAINS. TRANSMISSION DOES NOT OPERATE PROPERLY, CONSUMER WAS INFORMED OF RECALL 97S86, HOWEVER DEALER STATED THAT CONSUMER WOULD HAVE TO WORK WITH THEIR SCHEDULE FOR REPAIRS. WINDSHIELD WIPERS START BY THEMSELVES. TURN SIGNALS WORKED TOO FAST, DEALER FOUND A LOOSE WIRE. BRAKES DID NOT WORK EFFICIENTLY, TAKES A LONGER DISTANCE TO STOP. A/C WAS NOT COLD ENOUGH. SERPENTINE BELT WAS REPLACED. DOOR WAS OUT OF ADJUSTMENT, MAKING IT HARD TO OPEN FROM THE INSIDE.
