THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD TAURUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED INDEPENDENTLY TO APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH. THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKES, SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE ON THE SHOULDER. THE FAILURE RECURRED APPROXIMATELY SIX TIMES. THE ENGINE RPMS INCREASED EXCESSIVELY AS THE VEHICLE PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THERE WAS A CONCURRENT INVESTIGATION UNDER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE12005 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES) THAT COULD HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000.
