2011 HYUNDAI SONATA RECALL - #15V568000

RECALL FOR ENGINE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, to April 12, 2012 at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and equipped with either a 2.0 liter or 2.4 liter Gasoline Direct injection engine. In the affected vehicles, metallic debris may not have been fully removed during manufacturing of the engine crankshaft. If the debris was not completely removed, oil flow may be restricted through the connecting rod bearings, causing connecting rod damage. A worn connecting rod bearing will produce a metallic, cyclic knocking noise from the engine and possible engine failure.

Description Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, to April 12, 2012 at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and equipped with either a 2.0 liter or 2.4 liter Gasoline Direct injection engine. A worn connecting rod bearing will produce a metallic, cyclic knocking noise from the engine and possible engine failure.
Consequences Engine failure would result in a vehicle stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective action Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace the engine assembly, as necessary, free of charge. Additionally, Hyundai Motor America will increase the warranty for the engine sub-assembly (short block) to 10 years/120,000 miles for both original and subsequent owners of 2011 and 2012 Sonatas manufactured at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama equipped with 2.0 liter and 2.4 liter Gasoline Direct injection engines. Interim notifications were mailed to owners starting on October 8, 2015. A second notification will be mailed when parts are available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059 or by visiting www.HyundaiUSA.com/Campaign132. Hyundai's number for this recall is 132.

I purchase a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. At 32k miles my engine started knocking and stalling, i took it to the dealership where i was asked to pring in all my reciepts from oil changes, which i did. (this was in 2012 one year after i purchased it) i was told that i needed a new engine. They said I need a new engine because i drove the car with no oil, which wasnt true because i took all my reciepts from oil changes. Then i was told that because i did not change my oil EXACTLY every 3000 miles my warranty was void. After arguing with them for some time with no results i had to purchase a refurbished engine for $4500. And what do you know a few years later here comes the recall with exactly the problems i reported. I have put into the recall campaign for a refund but im not holding my breath. If anyone has recieved a refund on this please let me know

My 2011 Hyundai Sonata feels like it wont grip the road. I put on new tires and it still wont grip. the steering feels very lose, in fact I slid and hit a guardrail in a small amount of slush. I feel very unsafe in this car and of course, the dealership finds nothing wrong!!! They sold me an overpriced car which I hate!

We took our Sonata in for service on a small interior problem on the 24th of Sept and they did the recall check and update on the ESP. The car has never had a steering problem and we have been very happy with the vehicle as well as the dealership.

Do you drive a 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA?

Just because a car has been recalled does not mean it is not a reliable car. Millions of cars get recalled every year. Recalls often involve problems that are rare but could cause a serious problem if they occur. So the risk to any given driver is often remote, even though there may be a few high-profile incidents traced to the problem.
