NOW I FIND OUT THERE WERE RECALLS ON BOTH THESE THINGS WHICH I NEVER KNEW THAT THERE WAS A RECALL, EXCEPT FOR THE REAR SEAT BELTS. NOW , I, MY FAMILY OR NUMEROUS PEOPLE ON THE ROAD COULD HAVE GOTTEN KILLED WHEN MY CAR SHUT OFF. I FIND OUT THAT GM KNEW ABOUT THESE THINGS AND NEVER TOLD ME? THAT MAKES ME VERY ANGRY AND I DON'T APPRECIATE ALL THE MONEY THAT FIXING THESE THINGS COST ME.

A FEW MONTHS AGO I WAS BACKING UP AND MY STEERING WAS VERY HARD TO TURN TO THE LEFT. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO A SERVICE STATION AND THEY TOLD ME THE RIVETS THAT HOLD THE ARM INSIDE THE RACK & PINION BROKE LOOSE AND THIS WAS THE REASON FOR THE HARD STEERING. REPAIR SHOP TOLD ME I NEEDED A NEW RACK AND PINION WHICH WAS VERY EXPENSIVE. I DID NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO REPAIR AT THE TIME. SINCE THEN THE STEERING HAS GOTTEN WORSE. I FOUND ONE THAT FIT PERFECTLY, I CALLED THE OLDSMOBILE 800 NUMBER AND GAVE THE LADY THE CARS VIN # AND SHE SAID THAT ALTHOUGH THE CAR WAS LISTED THE VIN # WASN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, BUT SHE SAID I COULD TAKE IT TO A GM DEALER AND THEY COULD INSPECT IT TO SEE IF IT FIT THE RECALL AND COULD BE ADDED I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THE RECALL DIDN'T APPLY AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. SO I CALLED OLDSMOBILE BACK AND THEY SAID I WAS GIVEN INCORRECT INFORMATION. A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER, I BECAME AWARE THAT OLDSMOBILE HAD A RECALL FOR THAT SAME PROBLEM ON OVER 750,000 OF THEIR 1998 OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE'S. I CONTACTED OLDSMOBILE TOLL FREE NUMBER REGARDING THE RECALL. THEY CHECKED MY VIN NUMBER AND STATED THAT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT UNDER THE RECALL. HOWEVER, THEY COULD NOT TELL ME WHY ONLY CERTAIN INTRIGUE'S WERE RECALLED AND OTHER'S WERE NOT. HOWEVER, I FEEL THAT IF THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM ON THEIR 1998 OLDSMOBILE INTRIQUE'S AND ISSUED A RECALL, IT SHOULD COVER ALL OF THE UNITS AFFECTED. THIS COST OVER $700 TO REPAIR. I HAVE PREVIOUSLY FILED ONE COMPLAINT IN REGARD TO THIS ISSUE WITH GM CORP. I OWN A 1998 OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE, NOT ONE THAT WAS RECALLED, HOWEVER DUE TO THE UNSAFE, ERATIC, SPONTANIOUS STEERING OF THIS VEHICLE I FEEL THAT IT SHOULD BE FURTHER INVESTIGATED. THE PROBLEM WITH IT IS THAT WHEN I TURN MY STEERING WHEEL TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER ALL THE WAY, AT USUALLY A LOW SPEED, IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO GET THE STEERING SYSTEM TO "TURN BACK", EXCEPT SOMETIMES, IT LASHES BACK AROUND CAUSING MY VEHICLE TO GO THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION, WHILE TURNED THE OTHER WAY, THE WHEEL JUST WILL NOT STAY AT THAT SPOT, IT COMES BACK AROUND...AND HARD! IF IT DOES NOT EXIBIT EITHER OF THESE TWO SIGNS, THEN IT MAKES A HORRIBLE SOUND AND IS VERY HARD TO TURN. AT NORMAL SPEEDS (ON ROADWAYS, ETC) IT IS OKAY, HOWEVER AT SLOW SPEEDS MOSTLY IN PARKING LOTS ETC. IS WHEN THE PROBLEMS OCCUR. I ALMOST HIT A PEDESTRIAN IN A PARKING LOT THE OTHER DAY, AFTER TURNING OUT, AND HAVING THE STEERING "WHIP" BACK AROUND AND THE VEHICLE GO THE OTHER WAY. THAT DIDN'T CURE THE PROBLEM, AND WHEN I AGAIN BROUGHT IT IN MARCH 15, 2000, THEY CLAIMED THEY COULDN'T REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. I HAVE LIVED WITH IT EVER SINCE, AND THE CAR HAS ONLY 40,000 MILES. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN CONCERNED IT'S DANGEROUS. I'VE RECENTLY DISCOVERED THE FORUM DISCUSSIONS ON THE EDMUNDS WEB SITE, AND I FIND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM THAT GM DENIED FOR YEARS BUT NOW APPARENTLY ADMITS. MY 1998 OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE HAS ALWAYS KNOCKED SOMETIMES WHEN I TURN STEERING WHEEL. I WAS TOLD BY AN OLDSMOBILE DEALERSHIP THAT WAS NORMAL. AT 57,000 MILES I NOTICED IT BECAME VERY HARD TO TURN LEFT. IT JUST BECAME WORSE. RIGHT HAND TURNS WERE EASY BUT LEFT TURNS TOOK LOTS OF MUSCLE AND I COULD HERE A SLIGHT GRINDING. DEC. 2003 I HAD A NEW RACK AND PINION PUT ON CAR. LOOKING AT THIS SIGHT, I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH A 1998 OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE WITH THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO BE FIXED A COUPLE TIMES AND NOTED THAT THE PROBLEM HAS ONLY OCCURRED DURING WET WEATHER AT SLOWING SPEEDS (10-15MPH WITH BRAKES APPLIED), BUT ADDED THAT THE VEHICLE BECAME IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER EVEN WITH THE FULL FORCE OF MY BODY WEIGHT APPLIED TO ATTEMPT TO TURN THE WHEEL. I AM FEARFUL THAT THE PROBLEM COULD OCCUR AT HIGHER SPEEDS BUT LUCKILY HAVEN'T YET. THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES AND IS FRIGHTENING TO SAY THE LEAST. I CURRENTLY OWN A 1998 MODEL YEAR OLSDMOBILE INTRIGUE (VIN [XXX]) THAT CONTINUES TO HAVE A SEVERE CLUNKING AND AT TIMES DIFFICULT STEERING USUALLY AT LOWER SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE FOR THE SAME COMPLAINT ON 10/05/98 BUT THE ISSUE WAS NEVER RESOLVED AND WE WERE TOLD THIS WAS NORMAL. I HAVE RECENTLY TAKEN OVER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FROM MY WIFE AND AFTER DRIVING FOR A COUPLE WEEKS IT SEEMS MUCH WORSE AND A POSSIBLE SAFETY CONCERN. A FRIEND OF MINE WHO IS A TRUSTED TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS MOST LIKELY A FAILURE IN THE RACK-AND-PINION STEERING. I WILL BE TAKING THE VEHICLE IN EITHER TO OLDSMOBILE OR THIRD PARTY TO HAVE REPAIRED BUT WANTED TO LOG MY COMPLAINT. HOPEFULLY GM WILL UNDERSTAND THIS IS OEM DEFECT AND HELP REPAIR MY VEHICLE.
