INVESTIGATED REAR END NOISE. BOTH AXLES HAVE EXTREME WARE . BEARING FAILURE. AND MUST BE REPLACED. FORD RECALLED ONLY POLICE AND COMMERCIAL P70 P71 AND P72 BY ORDER OF NHTSA. FORD NEW ALL MODELS EXPERIENCED THIS FAILURE AS IDENTIFIED IN TSB 030505A ISSUED 3-5-03. MY FORD CV A P74 MODEL WAS MADE 11-05-02. ONLY A SILENT RECALL. AND NOT NOW HONORED AFTER NORMAL WRTY EXPIRES.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD CROWN VICTORIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. THE CONTACT NOTICED A ROARING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR AXLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 04V328000 (SUSPENSION:REAR) THAT MAY BE RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED ON ANY RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD CROWN VICTORIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH IN RAINY WEATHER CONDITIONS, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO HYDROPLANE AND JERK VIOLENTLY. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT SHE ENGAGED THE BRAKES AND AS A RESULT, SHE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASHED INTO A WALL. IN ADDITION, SHE STATED THAT WHILE INSPECTING THE VEHICLE SHE NOTICED THAT THE AXLE WAS FRACTURED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED CONTUSIONS TO THE HEAD, NECK AND BACK. THE VEHICLE WAS DECLARED DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 76,729.

TL- THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD CROWN VICTORIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE FAILED. THE CONTACT WAS TRAVELING DOWN A MOUNTAIN ROAD WHEN THE LIGHT FAILED. THE HEADLIGHTS AND THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS WERE BOTH INOPERABLE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR AXLE BEARING WOULD EXHIBIT A VERY LOUD NOISE WHEN DRIVING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A MANUFACTURER+S RECALL FOR BOTH THE REAR AXLE AND THE HEADLIGHTS FOR THE SAME YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL BUT ONLY FOR THOSE VEHICLES THAT WERE BEING UTILIZED AS POLICE VEHICLES ONLY. THE REAR AXLE WENT OUT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE APPROXIMATELY 8 MONTHS OR SO BEFORE THE DRIVER SIDE REAR AXLE STARTED GOING. THERE HAVE BEEN RECALLS FOR THIS SAME THING ON THE SAME MAKE, YEAR AND MODEL AS MY CAR. WE REPLACED THE PASSENGER REAR AXLE AND ARE NOW FACING HAVING TO REPLACE THE DRIVER'S SIDE.

TL CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD CROWN VICTORIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, HE BEGAN TO HEAR A NOISE FROM THE REAR. HE THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO INFORMED HIM THAT HIS REAR AXLE HAD FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THEY VERIFIED WHAT THE MECHANIC STATED AND ADVISED HIM THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL 04V328000 (SUSPENSION: REAR). THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 114,000.

2003 FORD P71 INTERCEPTOR: RIGHT REAR WHEEL BEARING AND AXEL SHAFT PROBLEM. RUMBLE REPORTED TO FORD. THEY SAID IT WAS FIXED ON RECALL WHEN OWNED BY SAN ANTONIO POLICE DEPT. BEFORE I BOUGHT IT. MY MECHANIC FOUND A BROKEN BEARING AND WORN AXEL SHAFT. BOTH ON RECALL. CAR ONLY HAS 68,000 MILES. FORD SAYS THEY FIXED IT ONCE SO TOO BAD. I SAID YOU DID NOT FIX IT RIGHT AND PUT BAD PARTS IN AGAIN BECAUSE IT FAILED IN 30K MILES. THEY SAID TOO BAD. REPLACING A DEFECTIVE PART WITH A DEFECTIVE PART IS +!@#$%. PLEASE GET THESE +!@#$%.

TL CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD CROWN VICTORIA. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE BEGAN MAKING A RUMBLING SOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED BY A LOCAL MECHANIC AND THE PASSENGER SIDE AXLE BEARING WAS REPLACED. A YEAR AND A HALF LATER, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO MAKE THE RUMBLING SOUND AGAIN AND IT WAS RETURNED TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC. THE DRIVER SIDE BEARING WAS REPLACED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,071. TL CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD CROWN VICTORIA. THE DIFFERENTIAL ON THE VEHICLE IS WORN OUT. THE REAR BEARINGS WERE WORN AND CAUSED THE AXLE TO SEPARATE FROM THE HOUSING. WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE BEARINGS BEGAN SMOKING AND SMELLED LIKE HOT ASPHALT. SMOKE ALSO ROSE FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE GEAR OIL LEAKED OUT OF THE BEARINGS AND ONTO THE BRAKES. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT PERMISSION WAS NEEDED FROM THE MANUFACTURER BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. AFTERWARDS, THE DEALER REPAIRED THE FAILURE UNDER RECALL NUMBER 04V328000 (SUSPENSION:REAR). THE DIFFERENTIAL FAILED SIX MONTHS LATER AND THE DEALER CURRENTLY REFUSES TO WORK ON THE VEHICLE UNLESS THE CONTACT PAYS FOR THE REPAIRS. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 94,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,344.

WHEN THE VEHICLE STOPPED, HE TOOK HIS FOOT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR AND THE VEHICLE WOULD START GOING AT A LOW SPEED AND WOULD ACCELERATE TO 55 MPH. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC SHOP AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH THE REAR SUSPENSION. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 96,000 MILES.

TL*- THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE 2003 CROWN VICTORIA POLICE INTERCEPTOR HAD A RECALL 04V328000 THAT WAS REPAIRED 08/24/04 FOR THE REAR SUSPENSION. HE STATED THAT THIS WAS THE SECOND FAILURE. WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH ON THE PARKWAY THE VEHICLE LOST POWER. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT REGAIN SPEED AND HE COASTED DOWN THE HILL TO THE AUTO DEALERSHIP. HE HEARD A SCREECHING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR AXLE. ON THAT DAY HE WAS TAKING THE VEHICLE TO HAVE THE RECALL REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE RECALL WAS REPAIRED, AND THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE UNTIL 02/27/07. WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH ON A CLEAR DAY THE VEHICLE MADE A SCREECHING NOISE FROM THE REAR AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP ON THE HIGHWAY DURING RUSH HOUR. HE SMELLED SMOKE, AND NOTICED A HUGE CLOUD OF SMOKE COMING FROM THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THIS VEHICLE WAS STUCK IN THE EXPRESS LANE AND COULDN'T MOVE IT. HE STATED THAT HE JUMPED OUT THE VEHICLE AND NOTICE THE TIRE WAS POINTED AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. THE CONTACT PLACE THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER IN PARK AND THE VEHICLE ROLL BACKWARDS, HE STATED THAT HE GOT THE VEHICLE TO STOP BY PUTTING SOME ROAD DEBRIS BEHIND THE WHEEL AND TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO GET THE WHEEL TO CHANGE ANGELS. HE WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE FROM ROLLING BACKWARDS. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR AXLE BROKE, AND THE BRAKED LINE RUPTURED. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED HIM THAT THE BRAKE LINE RUPTURE WAS WHAT CAUSED THE SMOKE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 81232. UPDATED 04/12/07.

UPDATED 9/1/2006 - SEARS REPALCED THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL BEARING BUT THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS POSSIBLE SPIDER GEAR OR CARRIER BEARING FAILURE.

THE VEHICLE WAS FIXED, BUT PROBLEM RECURRED. THIS HAPPENED ON JULY 14,2005. THE VEHICLE BEFORE HAND HAD STARTED MAKING A LOUD SOUND COMING FROM THE REAR SUSPENSION.

PROBLEM: THE REAR SWAY-BAR AND SWAY-BAR HOUSING ARE DAMAGED. APPARENTLY, THE INITIAL PROBLEM OCCURRED IN THE SWAY-BAR HOUSING, CAUSING EXCESS STRESS ON THE SWAY-BAR, CAUSING THE FAILURE. THE LOCAL DEALER TOLD ME FORD IS APPARENTLY RE-MANUFACTURING THE PARTS BECAUSE OF "PROBLEMS" WITH THIS MODEL. THE DEALER WAS UNSURE IF FORD WAS GOING TO INITIATE A RECALL ON THIS MODEL. THE VEHICLE IS OWNED BY THE KNOX COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, BUT IT IS ASSIGNED TO ME FOR PERMANENT USE. THE VEHICLE IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND IS (STILL) AWAITING SERVICE AT LANCE CUNNINHAM FORD IN KNOXVILLE, TN. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS DEMONSTRATES YET ANOTHER SERIOUS AND POTENTIALLY LIFE-ENDANGERING DEFECT WITH THE CROWN VICTORIA. IF I HAD BEEN OPERATING THE VEHICLE AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS (OR ABOVE, AS IS SOMETIMES REQUIRED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT WORK), I FEEL THAT (AT LEAST) SERIOUS BODILY INJURY WOULD HAVE RESULTED FROM A CRASH. I AM HOPEFUL THAT FORD WILL RECOGNIZE THE DEFECT AND TAKE APPROPRIATE MEASURES TO SAVE LIVES.

AT 40000 MILES A 2003 FORD CROWN VICTORIA DEVELOPED A LOUD NOISE. THE LOCAL MECHANIC DETERMINED THE AXLE'S WERE SOFT AND WERE WORN DOWN IN SPITE OF ONE OF THE BEARINGS BEING WELL LUBRICATED AND IN GOOD CONDITION. THIS IS A POLICE PACKAGE CRUISER. THIS DEFECT COULD EFFECT THOUSANDS OF POLICE DEPARTMENTS AND COST LIVES.
