I TRIED TO START MY TRUCK, BUT IT WOULDN'T START. IT TURNED OVER PERFECTLY BUT WOULD NOT START. IT HAD STARTED TWICE EARLIER IN THE DAY. THE FUEL PUMP DRIVER MODULE, LOCATED ABOVE THE SPARE TIRE ON THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK, HAD CORRODED AND FAILED.

THE RIGHT EXHAUST MANIFOLD STUDS HAD BROKEN APPROXIMATELY 5/5/2012, IN WHICH THEY DID NOT TELL ME THE FULL EXTENT OF THE DAMAGES. THEY JUST TOLD ME THE MANIFOLD WAS LEAKING AND THE COST TO REPAIR IT. THIS CAUSED THE MANIFOLD TO WARP AND LEAK. THE DEALER WOULD NOT REPAIR IT UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR LATER I CALLED THE WARRANTY COMPANY AND FOUND OUT IT WAS ACTUALLY COVERED. WHEN I HAD TAKEN IT IN, IN MAY 2012 THE DEALER WANTED TO CHARGE 1500.00 FOR THE REPAIRS. THE REPAIRS WERE FINALLY MADE IN MAY OF 2013 TO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD, BUT NOT TO THE CATALYTIC.CONVERTER WHICH STARTED CAUSING PROBLEMS IN JANUARY OF THIS YEAR. THIS LEAK MAY HAVE CAUSED THE RIGHT CATALYTIC CONVERTER TO FAIL ALSO, BUT HAVE FOUND MANY FORUMS STATING THAT FAILURE OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS ARE A COMMON PROBLEM ON THESE PICK UPS. AT THIS TIME I AM DRIVING THE PICK UP AND IT THROWS THE CODE P0420, FOR CATALYTIC CONVERTER BELOW EFFICIENCY THRESHOLD. THIS PROBLEM SHOULD ALSO BE FORWARDED TO THE E.P.A. BECAUSE PEOPLE CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE THEIR CATALYTIC CONVERTERS AT THE PRICE OF 1200.00 PER SIDE. IF THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH FORD F-150'S THIS NEEDS ADDRESSED. ALSO THE FAILURE OF THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD IS A SAFETY HAZARD THAT COULD CAUSE THE OCCUPANTS IN THE CABIN TO BE EXPOSED TO CARBON MONOXIDE. THE LEAKING MANIFOLD ALSO CONFUSES THE COMPUTER BY TELLING IT THAT THE OF BANK CYLINDERS IS RUNNING TO LEAN IN RESPONSE TO THOSE READINGS IT THEN ADDS FUEL TO THAT BANK WHICH CAUSES IT TO RUN RICHER ON THAT BANK THAN IT SHOULD. I BELIEVE THAT THIS CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER MAKING IT FAIL PREMATURELY.

OVER A PERIOD OF 3 MONTHS, I WAS EXPERIENCING A ROUGH IDLE, LOSS OF POWER WHEN ACCELERATING ON FLAT SURFACES AS WELL AS CLIMBING HILLS. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC WHO SAID IT WAS 2 BAD COIL PACKS. THEY FIXED IT AND 2 WEEKS LATER SAME INCIDENT OCCURRED AND THEY REPLACED IT. DURING THIS TIME, I COULD ALWAYS SMELL THE ODOR OF GASOLINE. AFTER THE LARGE EXPENSE I WAS ASSUMING, I CALLED THE FORD DEALER WHERE I BOUGHT MY 2006 F-150 LARIAT. THE SERVICE MANAGER OF 22 YEARS APPARENTLY NEVER HEARD OF THE COIL PACK GOING BAD ALONG WITH THE SPARK PLUGS BREAKING DUE TO THIS. AFTER ARGUING FOR A WEEK WITH THEM, THEY FINALLY AGREED TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF ALL 8 COIL PACKS. DURING THIS SEQUENCE, A COIL PACK WAS GOING BAD WEEKLY AND I HAD TO CONTINUALLY HAVE IT IN THE SHOP. FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE AND AS I CAN SEE, THERE ARE A LOT OF THESE ISSUES OUT THERE AND FORD CONTINUES TO DISREGARD A RECALL. THERE IS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE AS GASOLINE WILL EMIT FROM THE CRACK IN THE COIL PACK AND COULD CAUSE A FIRE UNDER THE RIGHT CONDITION. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

FORD HAS ISSUED TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ON CHANGING THE SPARK PLUGS. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE TO FORD. WHEN I CONTACTED FORD THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY CAN DUE SINCE ITS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT COMES ON AT THIS TIME. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO TWO DIFFERENT STATE LICENSED MECHANICS, AND CHAPMAN FORD DEALERSHIP IN PHILADELPHIA. ALL THREE TOLD ME THE PLUGS SHOULD HAVE LASTED 100,000 MILES OR BETTER AND THAT THEY HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE DESIGN OF THE ENGINE AND THESE PLUGS ARE VERY COMPLICATED TO REPLACE. SPECIAL TOOLS WOULD BE NEEDED TO REPLACE THEM. THEY ALSO SAID IT IS VERY COMMON THESE PLUGS WOULD BREAK OFF WHEN BEING REMOVED. THE COST TO REPLACE THE PLUGS WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $400 TO $550, WITH AN ADDITIONAL COST IF ANY PLUGS BREAK. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THERE IS NO RECALL WHEN THERE SHOULD BE. THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM AT THE EXPENSE OF THE OWNER, AS WELL AS A SAFETY ISSUE. I REALIZE SPARK PLUGS ARE NOT UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE COST TO REPLACE THEM IS RIDICULOUS BECAUSE AS THE MECHANICS STATED, IT WAS A FLAW IN THE DESIGN OF THE PLUGS AND THEY CORRODE TO THE ENGINE BLOCK. FORD REALIZED THIS AND CHANGED THE PLUGS IN NEWER VEHICLES TO A NON-CORROSIVE PLUG. I FEEL THE CUSTOMER SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR A POOR DESIGN FROM FORD. THERE ARE TSB'S ON THIS. I NEVER RECEIVED A LETTER FROM FORD TO GIVE ME THE HEADS UP ON THIS AND LEARNED AFTER THE FACT OF ATTEMPTING TO GET A TUNE UP.........NOW STUCK WITH TWO BROKEN SPARK PLUGS STUCK IN THE MOTOR AND HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH THIS IS GOING TO COST ME IN THE END. I AM WITHOUT MY TRUCK WHILE WE WAIT FOR A TOOL THAT WILL HOPEFULLY REMOVE THE BROKE OFF SLEEVES. IF IT DOESN'T WORK I WILL HAVE TO HAVE THE HEAD PULLED AND WHO KNOWS IF IT WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. FORD HAD NO INTENTION OF TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT EVEN THOUGH IT WOULD HAVE NORMALLY BEEN UNDER ORIGINAL WARRANTY EXCEPT FOR THE MILES I PUT ON A VEHICLE. THERE WAS NO ROADSIDE SERVICE IN THE AREA I WAS IN AND I GOT STUCK WITH ALL KINDS OF EXPENSES FROM IT. SEEMS OUR AMERICAN MANUFACTURERS SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR MULTIPLE KNOWN DEFECTS AS WELL AS OUR FOREIGN MANUFACTURERS. DEALER ADVISED THAT FORD ALSO HAS A "SPECIAL TOOL" DESIGNED FOR THIS 5.4 3 VALVE SERIES MOTOR THAT IS ENGINE SPECIFIC TO REMOVE THE BROKEN PIECE OF THE SPARKPLUG BECAUSE THIS HAPPENS SO OFTEN. ALL BUT ONE OF THE BROKEN PLUGS WAS ABLE TO BE REMOVED USING A SPECIALTY TOOL PURCHASED AT AN AUTOMOTIVE PARTS STORE. FORD DEALER WAS UNABLE TO GET THE LAST BROKEN PLUG EXTRACTED FROM CYLINDER HEAD WITH THEIR "SPECIAL TOOL". ENGINE NEEDED TO BE DISSEMBLED AND CYLINDER HEAD REMOVED SO THAT THE BROKEN PIECE COULD BE EXTRACTED. THIS REPAIR COST $1708.00 TO COMPLETE. ALONG WITH $85.00 DIAGNOSTIC FEE TO TELL ME THEY COULD NOT GET THE BROKEN PIECE OUT. THE REPAIR TOOK TWO WEEKS TO HAVE COMPLETED. I FEEL THAT FORD SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE AND THEY SHOULD REIMBURSE ME FOR MY COSTS DUE TO THEIR FAULTY DESIGN FLAW.

MY 2006 F-150 WITH THE 4.6L MOTOR EJECTED A SPARK PLUG FROM THE CYLINDER WITHOUT WARNING. I WENT TO CRANK THE VEHICLE ON 2/19/10, AND THERE WAS A HORRENDOUS KNOCKING OR TAPPING SOUND. UPON LOOKING, I NOTICED THAT THE SECOND CYLINDER IN FROM THE FIREWALL ON THE PASSENGER SIDE HAD EJECTED THE PLUG FROM THE CYLINDER WELL. WHEN I WENT TO TRY TO PUT THE PLUG BACK IN, IT WOULD NOT TIGHTEN. I JIGGLED THE PLUG AND RATCHET EXTENSION AND NOTICED THAT THE THREADED AREA TO ACCEPT THE PLUG WAS MUCH LARGER THAN THE STOCK PLUG. I UNDERSTAND THAT FORD HAS USED MANY EXCUSES AS TO WHY THIS HAPPENS, BUT I ASSURE YOU THAT I HAVE PURCHASED NO NEW PARTS. THIS TRUCK USES 1 QUART OF OIL PER THOUSAND MILES BEING DRIVEN. IT DOES NOT LEAK OIL, IT BURNS IT. AFTER CONTACTING MY LOCAL FORD DEALER AS WELL AS FORD MOTOR COMPANY, THEY STATED THAT THIS IS "NORMAL." THIS IS NOT NORMAL FOR A 2006 VEHICLE. IN A TIME WHEN THE UNITED STATES IS CONCERNED WITH GLOBAL WARMING, THIS VEHICLE IS PRODUCING EMISSIONS THAT ARE WAY OUT OF THE ORDINARY. THE SERVICE MANAGER INFORMED ME THAT THE 3 YEAR, 36,000 MILE FACTORY WARRANTY WAS PAST. IT WAS DURING A ROUTINE STATE INSPECTION MY MECHANIC FOUND THE ISSUE. I AGAIN CALLED MY MECHANIC. HE INFORMED THAT THERE IS AN 8 YEAR 80,000 MILE FEDERAL EMISSIONS WARRANTY. I AGAIN CALLED RICHMOND FORD LLC. SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER, HE TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NO SUCH WARRANTY. I HAD TO TAKE MY TRUCK TO A LOCAL EXHAUST SPECIALIST. IT TOOK A WEEK AND OVER $2000 TO REPAIR MY TRUCK. I CALLED FORD MOTOR COMPANIES CUSTOMER CARE LINE. THEY INFORMED ME THERE WAS A FEDERAL EMISSIONS WARRANTY AND IT WAS FOR 8 YEARS OR 80,000 MILES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A FORD DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT A SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT AND EJECTED ITSELF FROM THE ENGINE, WHICH DAMAGED THE CYLINDER HEAD. THE DEALER INSERTED A HELICAL COIL TO THE HEAD OF THE CYLINDER, BUT IT WAS NOT A FULL REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ANOTHER DEALER AND THEY ARE WAITING FOR HER TO DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT TO BREAK DOWN THE ENGINE FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSIS. THE CONTACT HAS A WARRANTY THAT CAN BE USED FOR THIS REPAIR, BUT THE WARRANTY DEPARTMENT IS DENYING THIS REPAIR. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 67,000.

2006 SUPERCREW 4X4 F150 THAT BEGAN MISSING AND SHAKING BADLY ALONG WITH RICH SMELL OF GASOLINE THIS MORNING. WAS TAKEN INTO SHOP WHERE IT LATER HYDROLOCKED AND WAS NOW UNABLE TO START. ASSESSMENT BY FORD TECHNICIAN FOUND THE ENGINE TO HAVE A FAULTY INJECTOR ON CYLINDER 6 THAT WAS STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION ALLOWING FUEL TO DUMP DIRECTLY INTO CYLINDER UNTIL FULL AND THE PISTON WAS UNABLE TO MOVE ANYMORE APPARENTLY RESULTING IN SOME BENT RODS ACCORDING TO TECHNICIAN. WAS ADVISED THAT ENGINE WAS BLOWN AND NEEDED $9500 FOR REPLACEMENT ENGINE SINCE VEHICLE WAS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY AT 56,000 MILES. FOUND OUT THAT MANY OF THE 2005 MODELS OF THIS VEHICLE HAD RECALLS ON THE SAME INJECTORS MAKING THIS TYPE OF REPAIR COVERED, BUT MY VIN DOES NOT SHOW THIS RECALL SINCE IT A 2006 MODEL. THIS BOTHERS ME BECAUSE MY TRUCK WAS ACTUALLY SHOWN TO BE MANUFACTURED IN SEPT 2005 AND POSSIBLY HAD THE SAME BATCH OF FAULTY INJECTORS INSTALLED IN IT.

ON MY TRIP BACK TO TAMPA THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND I HAD TO TOWED TO AMERICAN FORD IN TALLAHASSEE. THE REPLACED #6 FUEL INJECTOR. LATER, WHILE IN MEMPHIS #5 INJECTOR FAILED AND WAS REPLACED AT LANDERS FORD IN COLLIERVILLE. A FEW DAYS LATER THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND THIS TIME IT WAS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER, WHICH HAD TO BE REPLACED.

THIS SEEMS TO BE THE RESULT OF THIS PROBLEM AND NOT THE PROBLEM AS UPSTREAM FUEL/AIR MIXTURE PROBLEMS CAUSE LEANING/RICHING WHICH WILL MANIFEST ITSELF AS CAT OR OXY SENSOR DEFECTS. THESE PARTS WERE REPLACED AND 1 WEEK LATER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS RE APPEARED.

SO WE HAD IT TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAD TO GET ANOTHER ENGINE TO PUT IN THE TRUCK BECAUSE THE SECOND ENGINE WAS NOT ANY GOOD EITHER. WE BOUGHT THE TRUCK IN MARCH AND DID NOT EVEN GET TO DRIVE IT UNTIL THE END OF APRIL. IT WAS IN THE SHOP FOR OVER 30 DAYS AND IT HAD AROUND 8 TO 9 HUNDRED MILES PUT ON IT BY THE DEALERSHIP.

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH THE ENGINE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE DEALERSHIP INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED HOWEVER NO REPAIRS WERE MADE.

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE HAS SEVERAL PROBLEMS. WHILE DRIVING AT NO SPECIFIC SPEED, THE FRONT END VIBRATED AND RATTLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE SECOND PROBLEM OCCURRED WHILE ENTERING A CURVE AT 55MPH, THE RIGHT REAR TIRE BLEW. THE TIRE WAS NOT INSPECTED FOR THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE ALTHOUGH, THE TIRE WAS REPLACED. THE THIRD PROBLEM IS THE COOLING SYSTEM BOLTS WERE LOOSE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR ROUTINE INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE WHEN THE LOOSENESS OF THE BOLTS WAS DISCOVERED. THE DEALERSHIP TIGHTENED THE BOLTS FOR REPAIR.
