ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

11/9/2018 - BOCA RATON, FL
TL THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 FORD F-150. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTED INTO FIRST GEAR WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT TEMPORARILY LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND IT SPUN OUT OF THE RIGHT LANE INTO A GRASSY AREA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ALL FOUR TIRES SEIZED AND THE VEHICLE WAS IMMEDIATELY PLACED INTO NEUTRAL. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. DURING THE FAILURE, THE SPEEDOMETER AND INSTRUMENT PANEL BECAME INOPERATIVE. THE SPEEDOMETER GAUGE INCREASED AND DECREASED AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LOST POWER COMPLETELY. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE DOWNSHIFTED AND UPSHIFTED RANDOMLY. GRIECO FORD OF DELRAY BEACH (3000 SOUTH FEDERAL HIGHWAY, DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA 33483, (561) 278-278-0303) AND AUTONATION FORD MARGATE (5401 WEST COPANS ROAD, MARGATE, FLORIDA 33063, (954) 644-4976) WERE MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, THE DEALERS REQUESTED A DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE CONTACT ATTACHED A DIAGNOSTIC CODE READER TO THE VEHICLE AND REFERENCED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE: OSS SENSOR (P0720). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 119,218.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V248000 (POWER TRAIN) THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO JOEL CONFER FORD OF BELLEFONTE (2892 BENNER PIKE, BELLEFONTE, PA 16823, 814-355-5445) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION LEAD FRAME WAS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 71,973.

DRIVING 72MPH ON INTERSTATE 40 WITH CRUISE CONTROL ON. VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY DOWNSHIFTED TO FIRST GEAR. VEHICLE REAR TIRES LOCKED AND VEHICLE SWERVED ALMOST PUTTING ME OFF THE ROAD. WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED AND RUN OVER BY 18 WHEELER. WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL AND PULLED OVER. AFTER COLLECTING MYSELF, I DROVE THE REMAINING 10 MINUTES HOME WITHOUT ANY MORE TROUBLE.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: RQ17010 (POWER TRAIN); HOWEVER WAS EXPERIENCING THE FAILURE RELATED TO THE INVESTIGATION FOR THIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 104,000.

2012 F-150 HAS AN ECO BOOST 3.5 L MOTOR THAT MISFIRES IN DAMP/WET/RAINY/COOL WEATHER. MOTOR GOES INTO A MISFIRE MODE WITH NO POWER TO DRIVE OR ACCELERATE TRUCK. BEFORE THE MILEAGE WARRANTY WAS UP, TRUCK WAS TAKEN TO FORD FOR THEIR "FIX". HOWEVER, THE ISSUE HAS REMAINED FROM 2012 TO CURRENT YEAR, 2018, AND WITHOUT FORD FIXING THIS PROBLEM WILL CONTINUE FOR THE INDEFINITE FUTURE OF THESE MOTORS FROM FORD. CANNOT TRUST TRUCK TO PERFORM WHEN NEEDED AND A SAFETY HAZARD WHEN DRIVING, TOWING OR ACCELERATING WHEN THIS OCCURRS.

THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INJURED, BUT THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE SUSTAINED NECK AND FOOT INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BY THE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO AN UNKNOWN LOCATION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED FOR THE OTHER VEHICLE. THE DEALER (AUTONATION FORD CORPUS CHRISTI, 6250 S PADRE ISLAND DR, CORPUS CHRISTI, TX 78412, (361) 444-0125) WAS CONTACTED TO SCHEDULE A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 101,700.

AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND A P0016 ERROR CODE, WHICH INDICATED THAT THE TIMING BELT WAS LOOSE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT VISITED THE DEALER (MEDFORD MOTORS, INC, 105 WISCONSIN AVE, MEDFORD, WI 54451, (715) 748-3700) AND THE FAILURE WAS CONFIRMED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE REPAIR WOULD COST OVER $3,000 WITHOUT A RECALL AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND CONFIRMED WHAT THE DEALER STATED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000.
