TRUCK HAS 3.5L ECOBOOST V6 ENGINE. 18 MAY 2013. WAS TRAVELING ON TWO LANE HIGHWAY IN CENTRAL GEORGIA. PULLING A 3000 LB UTILITY TRAILER. HAD BEEN DRIVING IN LIGHT RAIN FOR ABOUT ONE HOUR. SPEED LIMIT WAS 55. I WAS FOLLOWING A CAR THAT WAS GOING ABOUT 45 MPH. WHEN I GOT TO A SLIGHT UPHILL GRADE THERE WAS A PASSING LANE AVAILABLE AND CLEAR OF OTHER VEHICLES. I PULLED TO THE LEFT LANE TO PASS THE SLOWER VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR ABOUT 3/4 DOWN TO ATTEMPT A DOWNSHIFT OF GEARS. THE TRUCK IMMEDIATELY BEGAN VIBRATING/SHUDDERING AND LOST ALMOST ALL POWER. I PULLED BACK TO THE RIGHT LANE AND HELD LIGHT PRESSURE ON THE ACCELERATOR AND WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN ABOUT 20 MPH SPEED. I HELD THE THROTTLE STEADY AND AFTER ABOUT TWO MINUTES THE ENGINE REGAINED FULL POWER AND I PROCEDED ON MY TRIP.

I WAS DRIVING ON A 2 LANE HIGHWAY, BEHIND A SEMI TRUCK, WITH SEVERAL CARS BEHIND ME. WE CAME TO A PASSING ZONE AND I BEGAN TO PASS THE SEMI TRUCK. I MOVED TO THE ONCOMING LANE AND ACCELERATED, BUT THE TRUCK LOST POWER. I BEGAN SLOWING DOWN IN THE ON COMING LANE, BUT COULDN'T RETURN TO THE RIGHT LANE BECAUSE THE VEHICLES THAT WERE BEHIND ME WERE PASSING ME IN THE RIGHT LANE AND I HAD A VEHICLE DIRECTLY BEHIND ME THAT WAS FOLLOWED ME TO PASS THE SEMI TRUCK. I LOCKED OUT 5TH AND 6TH GEARS ON THE TRANSMISSION TO GAIN SOME RPM BUT THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SHUDDER VIOLENTLY. I MOVED TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ON COMING LANE AND SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF. I SAT ON THE SHOULDER FOR SEVERAL MINUTES, GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND CHECKED UNDER IT FOR FLUIDS. THERE WERE NO FLUIDS UNDER THE VEHICLE. ALL THE GAUGES READ NORMAL. I DID ALL THIS ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ONCOMING LANE FACING ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THIS WAS NOT A GOOD POSITION TO BE IN. I STARTED THE VEHICLE, PUT IT IN GEAR TO SEE IF IT WOULD MOVE, IT DID. I HAD FULL POWER AND GOT BACK INTO TRAFFIC AND THE TRUCK RAN FINE. NO WARNING LIGHTS, NO INDICATION THAT ANYTHING WAS WRONG. SEVERAL MILES LATER I LOST ENGINE POWER AGAIN, AND AGAIN GOT THE VIOLENT SHUDDER, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. GOING TO SEE THE DEALER TODAY. THIS IS BAD! THE FIRST INCIDENT COULD HAVE CAUSED A HUGE ACCIDENT. MOVING ONTO THAT LEFT SHOULDER PROVED TO BE A GOOD MOVE, BUT I WAS AT PUCKER FACTOR 10 FOR A FEW SECONDS.

TL-THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 FORD F150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE LOST ACCELERATION POWER WHILE TOWING A BOAT. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO SHIFT THE GEAR MANUALLY AND REGAIN ACCELERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC PERFORMED, WHICH WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE A FAILURE CODE. THE DEALER ALSO TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT MOISTURE PENETRATED THE ECO-BOOST AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO LOSE ACCELERATION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000 AND THE APPROXIMATE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 28,300. KMJ

ON MONDAY DECEMBER 11, MY WIFE AND I LEFT ON A TRIP TO INDIANA WITH APPROXIMATELY 10,400 MILES ON THE TRUCK. AFTER A STOP, AT THE BOWLING GREEN, KY., REST STOP, I PROCEEDED TO RETURN TO TRAFFIC ON INTERSTATE 65. AFTER DETERMINING I COULD SAFELY ACCELERATE IN FRONT OF TWO SEMI-TRAILER TRUCKS, I ENTERED THE HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH AND WENT TO FULL THROTTLE. INSTEAD OF ACCELERATING, THE ENGINE WENT INTO A TOTAL LOSS OF POWER. AMID THE BLOWING OF AIR HORNS AND MY WIFE'++S SCREAMS I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO AVOID A COLLISION BY YANKING THE TRUCK ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE. THE ENGINE DID NOT STOP RUNNING, BUT APPEARED (TO ME) TO BE TOTALLY FLOODED. THE ENGINE RAN ON ?? (NUMBER OF) CYLINDERS FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE EIGHTH OF A MILE BEFORE RETURNING TO RUNNING ON ALL CYLINDERS. I DO NOT THINK THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT BELIEVED ME WHEN THEY LOOKED AT THE TRUCK. I HAVE BEEN A MECHANIC AND AN ENGINEER FOR A LOT OF YEARS, I KNOW WHAT HAPPENED THIS TIME AND IT CAME VERY CLOSE TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND/ OR INJURY TO MY WIFE AND ME. THIS WAS A VERY CLOSE ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE AND IT PRACTICALLY DESTROYED OUR CONFIDENCE IN THE TRUCK. WHILE STILL ON OUR TRIP, WE MADE THE DECISION TO FORGO THE HASSLE OF TRYING TO PERSUADE THE SERVICE DEPT. THERE WAS A PROBLEM, AND GET A DIFFERENT BRAND OF NEW TRUCK. I HAVE TAKEN THE HIGH FINANCIAL LOSS OF TRADING FOR ANOTHER NEW TRUCK. I AM NOT TOTALLY SATISFIED WITH THIS VEHICLE. THE FORD HAS MANY ENHANCEMENTS AND I PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE TRIED HARDER TO GET THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE ACTION. BUT WOULD IT HAVE BEEN WORTH THE RISK OF ANOTHER ENGINE INCIDENT, NO I DO NOT THINK SO. THIS WAS THE SECOND AND MOST SERIOUS INCIDENT AND AFTER FORD SERVICE HAD PRONOUNCED THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH MY ENGINE. I SOLD THE TRUCK WITH 11,399 MILES ON THE SPEEDOMETER.

VEHICLE SINCE BRAND NEW HAS A STUTTERING/STALLING ISSUE AT 55MPH AND THE DEW POINT IS HIGH. ATTEMPTING TO PASS A VEHICLE ACCELERATING FROM 55MPH AND THE TRUCK EITHER STUTTERS OR STALLS. THIS ALMOST CAUSED A HEAD-ON COLLISION. I AM SCARED TO PULL OUT IN TRAFFIC OR PASS ANYONE DUE TO THE INHERENT ISSUE. FORD DID REPLACE A INTERCOOLER/CAC FOLLOWING TSB 12-10-19. THIS HAS NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM. WE. I RETURNED THE TRUCK STILL BROKE. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME HE HAS THE SAME TRUCK AND THAT IT IS AN INHERENT ENGINE PROBLEM FORD HAS ACKNOWLEDGED BUT THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME. I AM WORRIED EVERYDAY I MIGHT DIE DRIVING MY TRUCK AND EVEN MORE UPSET THAT I PAY MONTHLY FOR SOMETHING THAT IS BROKE.

WELL I PURCHASED THIS TRUCK A BRAND NEW 2012 FORD F-150 XLT SUPER CREW W/ 3.5L ECOBOOST ENGINE. THE TRUCK HAD 104 MILES WHEN I BOUGHT IT. AFTER A WEEK I STARTED TO NOTICE THAT THE TRUCK SHUDDER'S WHEN I ACCELERATE FROM A DEAD STOP AND IT ALSO SHUDDERS WHEN I COME TO A FULL STOP. FOR ABOUT A WEEK EVERY SINGLE DAY AND TIME I WOULD START AND STOP THE TRUCK WOULD SHUDDER. I THOUGHT THIS WAS BECAUSE THE ENGINE JUST NEEDED TO BREAK IN. WELL I AM GOING ON THE 4TH WEEK OF OWNING THIS TRUCK AND IT STILL OCCURS. THE SHUDDER THAT IS. THE SHUDDER ALSO OCCURS NOW WHEN I HAVE A COLD ENGINE START AND I PUT THE TRUCK IN REVERSE IT STARTS TO SHUDDER. I DO FEEL AS THE DRIVER IT HAS EFFECTED THE PERFORMANCE OF MY TRUCK.

FIRSTLY, WHILE DRIVING ALONG A 3 MILE STRAIGHT STRETCH OF ROAD I PULL OUT TO PASS A SLOWER VEHICLE. MY TRUCK ENGINE SHUT DOWN IN TO WHAT FORD DESCRIBES AS "LIMP HOME MODE" MID-PASS AND I HAD TO DECELERATE QUICKLY AND GET BACK IN TO MY LANE BEFORE A HEAD ON COLLISION OCCURRED. THERE WERE VEHICLES IN THE LANE THAT I HAD TO CUTOFF TO GET TO SAFETY.I HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE THEN RE-START IT BEFORE THE CONDITION CLEARED UP. THIS SAME SCENARIO HAPPENED AGAIN IN SEPTEMBER OF 2012. THIS TIME I WAS DRIVING ALONG WITH MY CRUISE CONTROL SET TO 62 MPH WHEN FOR NO REASON THE VEHICLE WENT IN TO "LIMP HOME MODE" AGAIN. I HAD TO PULL OVER ONCE AGAIN AND STOP/START THE ENGINE. I WAS IN A FAIR AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC WHEN THIS OCCURRED AND IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION HAD THER NOT BEEN A CONVENIENT PULLOUT IN THE AREA. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A FORD DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. SECONDLY, THE ENGINE MAKE A POPPING SOUND WHILE I ACCELERATE FROM A STOP (AGAIN THE DEALERSHIP CAN FIND NOTHING) THIRDLY, THE FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM RANDOMLY CYLES SOME UNKNOWN SOLENOID DURING USE WHICH THE DEALER CANNOT REPRODUCE. THIS IS A BRAND NEW ECOBOOST ENGINE, WHICH I LOVE BUT WHICH I FEEL IS VERY UNSAFE AND I CAN GET NO RESOLUTION FROM FORD.

LOSS OF POWER WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOPPED POSITION, MORE FREQUENTLY AS TIME GOES ON, AND WHEN TRUCK HAS BEEN DRIVEN FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. WHEN FIRST BOUGHT VEHICLE, THERE WAS A SHUDDER AND A SHAKE EXTREMELY NOTICEABLE AT 45 MPH. THE TRUCK WAS BROUGHT INTO THE FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED AND CHECKED FOR A DEFLECTOR PLATE. THE DEFLECTOR PLATE WAS INSTALLED, SO A NEW INTERCOOLER WAS ORDERED AND A LONG WAIT WITH THIS TROUBLESOME PROBLEM OCCURED. THE NEW INTERCOOLER ARRIVED AND WAS PUT IN, BUT THE SAME PROBLEMS PERSIST. THE SHUDDER AND SHAKE IS NOW MORE NOTICEABLE AT 35MPH BUT IS STILL THERE AND NOTICEABLE AS EVER. THE FORD DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT FORD HAS A NEW SERVICE BIULLETIN OUT, BUT HAS NOT ISSUED A FIX. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE, AND I HOPE THAT WITH ALL THE DRIVING I DO, I DON'T GET A LOSS OF POWER WHEN I NEED IT RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT AND POSSIBLE FATALITY.

ON MY WAY HOME LAST OCTOBER AFTER PICKING UP MY NEW F-150 AT THE DEALERSHIP I WAS ATTEMPTING TO PASS A CAR ON THE INTERSTATE. IT WAS ON A HILL AND WHEN I PUSHED ON THE GAS TO TRY AND PASS THE CAR THE TRUCK SHUTTERED AND SLOWED DOWN LOSING POWER AND SPEED. THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE IT WAS THAT IT "BOGGED" DOWN. THERE WAS NO ENGINE LIGHT. HOWEVER, I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG, BUT I FIGURED I WOULD HAVE IT CHECKED OUT WHEN I CAME IN TO GET THE RUNNING BOARDS INSTALLED. A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER, HOWEVER, AN INCIDENT OCCURRED THAT WAS A BIT MORE DANGEROUS. I WAS ATTEMPTING TO PASS A SLOWER CAR ON A TWO LANE HIGHWAY (NO HILL) WHEN THE SAME THING HAPPENED WHEN I PUSHED DOWN ON THE GAS TO SPEED UP TO PASS--THE TRUCK SIMPLY BOGGED DOWN--LOSING POWER AND SPEED. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE SAID THAT THERE HAS BEEN REPORTED SIMILAR PROBLEMS EITH THE ENGINE AND FORD WAS WORKING ON A FIX. BUT SO FAR THERE HAS BEEN NOTHING FROM THE COMPANY. I HAVE AVOIDED THE PROBLEM BY NOT ACCELERATING THE ENGINE RAPIDLY BUT THIS IS NOT A PERMANENT FIX. WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, I HEARD A POP AND 'DING' SOUND BEFORE LOSING ALL ELECTRICAL ITEMS - DASH BOARD, HEAD LIGHTS, TAIL LIGHTS, BRAKE LIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS, ETC., BUT THE ENGINE WAS STILL OPERATING. I THEN FELT A GRINDING NOISE AND IMMEDIATELY EXITED THE HIGHWAY SAFELY TO PARK AT A GAS STATION. I TURNED OFF AND REMOVED THE KEY BUT THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. I WAS ONLY A FEW MILES FROM A FORD DEALERSHIP. I INSERTED THE KEY, TURNED IT TO THE ON POSITION AND TRIED TO PUT THE TRUCK INTO GEAR WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE. THE TRANSMISSION BRAKE RELEASE WOULD NOT WORK. I CALLED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE WHO SCHEDULED A TOW TO THE DEALERSHIP. I HAD TO CALL THE DEALERSHIP TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO TURN THE ENGINE OFF. THEY ADVISED THAT I SHOULD PULL THE FUEL PUMP RELAY FUSE WHICH DID STOP THE ENGINE. TO DATE, FORD DOES NOT KNOW WHAT IS WRONG.

MERGING ONTO INTERSTATE AT 50 MPH I ACCELERATED HARD TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC. COMPLETE LOSS OF ACCELERATION NEARLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT WITH A TRACTOR TRAILER BEHIND US. VIOLENT SHUDDERING OF ENTIRE VEHICLE, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FLASHED AND THEN REMAINED ON. AFTER NEARLY A MINUTE OF FEATHERING THE ACCELERATOR, THE PROBLEM SUBSIDED AND ABILITY TO ACCELERATE WAS REGAINED. THIS HAD ALREADY HAPPENED ONCE ON THE SAME DRIVE AND A COUPLE IF TIMES PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. I DROPPED THE TRUCK OFF AT THE DEALER THIS AM AFTER DRIVING IT FOR TWO DAYS WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. THEY SAID THEY WOULD CALL WITH AN UPDATE IN THE AFTERNOON, BUT WHEN 7PM ROLLED AROUND AND I HAD NOT YET HEARD FROM THEM I CALLED TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY WERE WAITING FOR A REPLACEMENT INTERCOOLER AND TO CALL BACK IN THE MORNING AND SPEAK WITH THE SERVICE ADVISOR. SEEMS LIKE A VERY COMMON - NOT TO MENTION DANGEROUS - PROBLEM FOR FORD NOT TO BE PUBLICLY DEALING WITH IT, OR AT LEAST BEING MORE PROACTIVE ABOUT ISSUING A RECALL FOR. HOPEFULLY NO ONE GETS HURT BEFORE THE PROBLEM IS ACKNOWLEDGED & FIXED.

MADE A LEFT TURN AND ACCELERATED TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC ON 3/19/13 WHEN THE WHOLE VEHICLE SHUDDERED VIOLENTLY AND THE ENGINE LOST POWER RESULTING IN PEOPLE HAVING TO HIT THEIR BRAKES AND HONK AT US TO AVOID HITTING US. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO BOG DOWN AS THE ACCELERATOR WAS PUSHED. I LET THE VEHICLE COAST TO ALMOST A STOP BEFORE THE SYMPTOMS WENT AWAY AND COULD DRIVE AS NORMAL. I LOOKED UP SYMPTOMS ON INTERNET AND FOUND MANY PEOPLE EXPERIENCING SAME SYMPTOMS WITH THIS NEW ECO-BOOST ENGINE BY FORD IN THEIR TRUCKS. IT SEEMS THAT THE INTERCOOLER CAN COLLECT CONDENSATION IN HUMID OR RAINY ENVIRONMENTS AND HAVE THAT WATER FORCED TO THE ENGINE WHEN THE ACCELERATOR IS PUSHED HARD CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SHUDDER AND LOSE POWER. FORD HAS APPARENTLY IDENTIFIED THIS PROBLEM AND ISSUED A TBS SERVICE BULLETIN INSTRUCTING THE CHARGED AIR COOLER BE REPLACED WITH A NEWLY DESIGNED ONE FOR MODEL YEAR 2011-2012 F-150'S WITH THE 3.5L V6 ECO-BOOST ENGINE IF A CUSTOMER COMPLAINS OF THE ABOVE SYMPTOMS AND SOME PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED THIS SOLUTION HAS NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AS ONE COULD LOSE POWER AS MANY HAVE REPORTED, TOWING HEAVY LOADS, ON THE HIGHWAY PASSING AND OTHER SITUATIONS THAT A LOSS OF POWER COULD LEAD TO A FATAL ACCIDENT. THE "NEWLY DESIGNED" CHARGED AIR COOLER HAS BEEN ON BACK ORDER FOR MONTHS AND PEOPLE ARE BEING TOLD TO "DRIVE THEIR VEHICLES CAREFULLY" IF THEIR DEALER DOESN'T PROVIDE A RENTAL OR VEHICLE TO DRIVE WHILE AWAITING REPAIR. ENGINE LIGHT FLASHED AND STAYED LIT FOR NEXT 20 MINUTES. EXPERIENCED SIMILAR SCENARIO LATER THE SAME DAY. TOOK TO DEALER. DEALER INDICATED CHARGED AIR COOLER WORKS "TOO WELL". COOLS AIR SO MUCH THAT CONDENSATION FORMS AND CAUSES THE ISSUE. DEALER INDICATED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN HAD BEEN ISSUED ON THE PROBLEM. NEED NEW CAC AND SHIELD. TWO WEEKS (+/-) BEFORE PARTS ARRIVED. DEALER COMPLETED TSB 12-10-19 , ACCORDING TO THE WORK ORDER: REPLACED CAC COOLER ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLED NEW AIR DEFLECTOR SHIELD, REPROGRAMMED PCM. DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE. SAME PROBLEM ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE DEALER. DROVE IT FOR ONE WEEK ASSUMING MOISTURE MAY NEED TIME TO "CLEAR UP". PROBLEM STILL EXISTED FOR 7 DAYS. ANY MILD TO STRONG THROTTLE INPUT WOULD BRING ON SHUDDER. ONE WEEK AFTER "FIXED" WITH NEW CAC, I TRIED TO MERGE ONTO HIGHWAY, AT 60-70 % THROTTLE, VIOLENT SHUDDER OCCURRED AND ENGINE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER. AGAIN, COASTED ON SHOULDER UNTIL TRUCK WOULD RESPOND TO THROTTLE INPUT WITHOUT SHUDDERING AND POWER LOSS. LUCKILY, TRAFFIC WAS "LIGHT" AT THE TIME. COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS INCIDENT. LUCKILY I HAD A SHOULDER TO PULL OVER ON AS I HAD ENTERED THE INTERSTATE AHEAD OF A TRACTOR-TRAILER COMBO WHO WAS DOING THE SPEED LIMIT AND APPROACHING MY REAR BUMPER VERY QUICKLY. AFTER THE ENGINE BEGAN MISFIRING AT ABOUT 45 MPH, I COULD NOT INCREASE SPEED, I WAS ONLY ABLE TO SLOW DOWN AND PULL OFF ONTO THE SHOULDER. I HAD SEVERAL SUCH INCIDENCES FROM DAY 1 OF OWNERSHIP AND I ALREADY FILED A SIMILAR REPORT IN JULY 2012 (#10465748). NEVER HAPPENS DURING DRY WEATHER. FORD APPLIED THE DEFLECTOR SHIELD AND REPROGRAMMING, WHICH DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM AT ALL, BUT NOTICEABLY REDUCED THE ENGINE POWER, LEADING TO SHUDDER IN 6TH GEAR WHEN GOING UPHILL AT 60 MPH (APPARENTLY DUE TO A LACK OF ENOUGH TORQUE; SHUDDER DISAPPEARS WHEN SWITCHING DOWN TO 5TH GEAR). GAS MILEAGE IS DOWN TO 15-16 MPG AT CONSTANT SPEED OF 65 MPH ON HIGHWAY, FAR FROM THE ADVERTISED NUMBERS. SEEING ALL THE COMPLAINTS IN THIS DATABASE AND ON F150 FORUMS, I THINK IT IS TIME FOR FORD TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM PUBLICLY AND COME UP WIT A FIX VIAL RECALL.

I WAS DRIVING TO WORK ENTERING THE FREEWAY DOING 55 I TRIED TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE PAST A SLOWER MOVING CAR AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND THE TRUCK LOST POWER. THIS HAS OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE OCTOBER ESPECIALLY AFTER RAIN OR EVEN IN THE MORNINGS WHEN IT HAS BEEN A HEAVY FROST OVERNIGHT. ALSO MY M.P.G IS DOWN TO 11 TO 13 M.P.G THIS IS HORRIBLE ESPECIALLY THIS DAY AND AGE IN VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY. TRAVELED FROM BENTON, LA TO LITTLE ROCK AR. WAS DRIVING DOWN TWO LANE HIGHWAY AT 55 MPH IN THE RAIN. HAD TO COME TO STOP AS A VEHICLE WAS TURNING LEFT. UPON ACCELERATING VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PAST 15 MPH. WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO SHOULDER. TURNED OFF VEHICLE AND REMOVED KEY. RESTARTED ENGINE. VEHICLE WOULD ONLY RUN APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH. DROVE TO NEXT TOWN ABOUT 10 MILES AWAY. STOPPED AT GAS STATION FOR APPROXIMATELY AN HOUR. SINCE IT WAS LATE IN THE EVENING WE HAD TO CONTINUE TRAVELING. TRUCK THEN WOULD RUN ABOUT 70 MPH DOWN THE INTERSTATE, BUT ANY ACCELERATION WOULD CAUSE THE TRUCK TO HESITATE, SHAKE, AND LOOSE POWER. ONLY EXTREMELY EASY ACCELERATION WOULD WORK. NO DOWN SHIFTING POSSIBLE. TRUCK WAS DIAGNOSED AT CHENAL FORD IN LITTLE ROCK AR. FOUND TO HAVE WATER IN THE ENGINE FROM ENTERING THE TURBO CHARGER AIR INTAKE. WATER APPARENTLY ACCUMULATES IN THE TURBO CHARGER IN THE RAIN. IF HARD ACCELERATION OCCURS DURING THE RAIN, WATER IS PULLED TO THE ENGINE DAMAGING THE SPARK PLUGS AND COIL PACKS. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH FORD AS THE HAVE SEVERAL SERVICE BULLETINS OUT. UNFORTUNATELY, THE DEALER IN LOUISIANA HAS NOT BEEN PROVIDED A CORRECTION FROM FORD. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THE TURBO INTAKE SYSTEM HAS BEEN REDESIGNED FOR THE 2013 MODEL YEAR. FORD AT THIS TIME IS NOT OFFERING TO REPLACE THE AIR INTAKE. AS SUCH, I THIS VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE IN THE RAIN. A CAR SHOULD NOT STALL WHEN ACCELERATING.

WHILE ATTEMPTING TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC PULLING A TRAILER I PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL AND THE TRUCK DOWN SHIFTED BUT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE TRUCK WILL DROP INTO 3RD GEAR AND WILL NOT EXCEED 4000 RPM. THIS HAS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES AND HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 3 OR 4 TIMES. IT HAS ALSO HAPPENED WITHOUT A TRAILER. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS I HAVE HAD TO PULL OVER AND TURN THE TRUCK OFF TO GET IT TO GO. SOMETIMES I CAN JUST COME OFF THE PEDAL AND PRESS IT AGAIN TO CORRECT. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE THAT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THE DEALER HAS REPROGRAMMED THE TRUCK SEVERAL TIMES AND REPLACED THE CONVERTERS TWICE. I HAVE ASKED FORD TO BUY BACK THE TRUCK BUT THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED YET. THE TRUCK IS GOING BACK INTO THE SHOP TOMORROW AND I AM CONSIDERING UTILIZING THE LEMON LAW.

2012 F150 ECOBOOST. WAS CRUISING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60-65 CLOSING IN ON A SLOWER MOVING BUS. PULLED OUT TO PASS AND GAVE IT MORE THROTTLE THE VEHICLE DID NOT ACCELERATE EVEN WITH THROTTLE TO THE FLOOR. HAD TO HIT THE BRAKES AND PULL BACK BEHIND THE BUS TO AVOID A COLLISION. AFTER RECOVERING THE MOTOR SEEMED TO RECOVER AND ALLOWED FOR ACCELERATION AGAIN. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO US. NEITHER TIME DID THE COMPUTER REGISTER A FAULT CODE OR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE FIRST TIME WE TOOK IT FOR THE ISSUE, FORD SERVICE COULD NOT DO ANYTHING AS NO CODE WAS FOUND AND UNABLE TO RECREATE IN TEST DRIVE. AT THAT TIME TSB 12-6-4 WAS OUT PERTAINING TO THIS ISSUE. AFTER THE SECOND TIME,AGAIN THERE WAS NO CODE OR RECREATION BUT A NEW TSB 12-10-19 SUPERSEDED THE PREVIOUS TSB AND ALLOWED FOR REPAIRS. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION THAT FORD IS AWARE OF AND COULD POSSIBLY AFFECT ALL 2011-2012 F150 ECOBOOST MOTORS AND SOME EARLY 2013 MODELS. THE CHARGE AIR COOLER AS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED IS CREATING CONDENSATION THAT CAUSES THESE POWER LOSS EVENTS. THE CORRECTIVE ACTIONS IN TSB 12-10-19, IF SUCCESSFUL, SHOULD BE APPLIED TO ALL F150 ECOBOOST VEHICLES BUILT WITH THE OLDER INTERCOOLER DESIGN.

SAW ON OTHER FORUMS AND THIS SITE THAT OTHER F150'S WITH ECOBOOST ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE. TOOK TRUCK TO DEALER - THEY HAD NOT HEARD OF ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE ECOBOOST. I SHOWED THEM THE PRINTOUT FROM THIS SITE HIGHLIGHTING THE TSB 12-6-4, WHICH THEY ARE GOING TO DO. MY FATHER PURCHASED THE SAME TRUCK AND HE HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO HIM THIS SEPTEMBER. TOOK IT BACK TO DEALERSHIP, IT HAS BEEN THERE FOR 3 DAYS AND THEY STATE "ARE WAITING FOR FORD TO ADVISE THEM ON WHAT TO DO NEXT." THIS IS A 2012 FORD F150 ECOBOOST LARIAT 4X4 SUPERCREW WITH ONLY 5,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS A STICKER OF NEARLY $50,000. I WOULD EXPECT NO PROBLEMS OR AT LEAST A TIMELY SOLUTION. EITHER WAY, MERGING ONTO THE INTERSTATE OR NEEDING TO ACCELERATE AND THE TRUCK FAILING TO DO SO IS A SAFETY ISSUE.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF FAILURE AND NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 7,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 23,246.

I HAD TSB 12-6-4 APPLIED TO THE VEHICLE FRIDAY, THREE DAYS AGO, AND THOUGH IT MAY REDUCE THE LIKELIHOOD OF THIS SITUATION, IT DOES NOT OVERCOME WHAT APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW WITH THE INTERCOOLER IN THIS ECOBOOST MOTOR. THIS FLAW ALLOWS FOR CONDENSATED WATER TO BE SUCKED INTO THE MOTOR AND CAUSING THE MISFIRE DURING HARD ACCELERATIONS AFTER LONG PERIODS OF USING CRUISE CONTROL IN HIGH HUMIDITY SITUATION. THE IMPACT OF LOSING POWER WILL BE A FATAL ACCIDENT FOR A CUSTOMER AT SOME POINT IN TIME IF IT HAS NOT ALREADY OCCURRED.

AS SOON AS THE POWER/SPEED LOSS OCCURRED THE TRUCK BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY FOR ABOUT A MINUTE OR TWO UNTIL I EVENTUALLY SLOWED TO ABOUT 50MPH. THIS HAS HAPPENED 2 TIMES SINCE OWNING THE VEHICLE. THE TRUCK HAS 5000 MILES PRESENTLY AND HAS BEEN BACK TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES FOR SOFTWARE UPDATES, A CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT, TO ADD AN AIR DEFLECTOR AND IT CONTINUES TO THROW CODES AND TURN ON THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I GOT IT BACK YESTERDAY AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AGAIN ON MY DRIVE HOME. ALSO MILEAGE SEEMS TO BECOMING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. I TRY TO AVOID PASSING SITUATIONS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE IN FEAR THE VEHICLE WILL CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR MYSELF AND OTHER DRIVERS ON THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY.

I WAS DRIVING IN A LIGHT RAIN WHEN I GENTLY PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR AND THE ENGINE STARTED VIBRATING EXCESSIVELY MAKING THE WHOLE TRUCK VIBRATE LIKE THE WHEELS WERE FALLING OFF. THE INCIDENT LASTED ABOUT 10 SECONDS BEFORE IT RETURNED TO ACTING NORMALLY.
